Gears of War: E-Day has launched, sending players back to the Locust Horde's initial invasion of the city of Kalona. The prequel puts you in control of Marcus Fenix as he fights through the previously unknown subterranean species during Emergence Day. The game delivers the franchise's signature campaign, multiplayer, and Horde mode experiences, but completion time varies significantly depending on how thoroughly you explore.
Campaign Duration
Playing through the campaign on Normal difficulty takes approximately 12 to 15 hours. However, E-Day departs from the series' traditional linear design once you reach Act 2. At that point, Kalona opens up for exploration, allowing players to hunt for collectibles, complete side missions, and unlock weapon mod slots and squad perks. These activities are optional—you can rush through the scripted missions if you prefer a more traditional Gears experience—but they reward thorough exploration and can make combat easier.
The game includes multiple difficulty settings, and achievements tied to the hardest difficulty provide additional challenge for veterans. Four-player co-op support adds some replayability, though solo players won't find much new content on repeat runs beyond collectibles and achievements.
Reaching 100% Completion
Unlocking everything in E-Day is a grind. The franchise has a long history of demanding achievement requirements, and this entry continues that tradition. Completing all achievements could take hundreds of hours and includes tasks like beating Horde mode on the highest difficulty, accumulating over 25,000 PvP kills, and reaching maximum level in the revamped Horde Siege mode. Numerous cosmetic unlocks also extend the endgame considerably.
Structure and Chapters
The campaign spans five acts broken into individual chapters that can be selected from the main menu for replays. Acts 1 and 5 are the shortest, while Acts 2, 3, and 4 are substantially longer—particularly if you explore Kalona's open areas. The game contains 28 chapters total, including a prologue and epilogue. Act 1 has five chapters, Act 2 has five, Act 3 has six, Act 4 has six, and Act 5 has five chapters plus the epilogue, providing a substantial narrative structure across the invasion's timeline.
