An ultra-rare Gold Star Rayquaza card has smashed records by becoming the first English-language Pokémon Trading Card Game release to cross the seven-figure threshold. Distributed by sports collectibles platform Fanatics, details of the transaction reveal that the card fetched an unprecedented $1,020,000, establishing a historical milestone for Western Pokémon card valuations.
The record-breaking transaction significantly surpasses the previous high-water mark for English cards, which was held by another Gem Mint PSA 10 Gold Star Rayquaza that went for $682,500. Furthermore, this landmark sale outpaces high-grade Base Set Charizard sales by more than half a million dollars, solidifying Rayquaza's place as a primary catalyst for rising secondary market prices.
This specific Rayquaza variant originally debuted in 2005 as part of the EX Deoxys expansion set during the Pokémon EX Series era, which tied into the third-generation video games Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. EX Deoxys marked the third set in the franchise to feature Gold Star cards—a rare subset known for featuring unique artwork where the Pokémon appears to extend past the traditional frame boundaries.
Gold Star items remain among the most valuable in the entire trading card landscape due to their extreme scarcity during their original print run. Fewer than 30 distinct Pokémon received the Gold Star treatment throughout the mid-2000s, and pulling one from a booster pack was exceptionally difficult. Because surviving copies are nearly two decades old, finding them in pristine condition is rare, driving up values even for lower grades or less prominent characters. For instance, lower-graded examples like a PSA 3 Gold Star Umbreon recently garnered over $10,000, while a PSA 7 Charizard reached $15,000, and even a Registeel card surpassed $3,000.
While $1.02 million sets a new standard for English-language releases, it remains behind the overall global record held by the Japanese Pikachu Illustrator card. That legendary piece was purchased by public figure Logan Paul in a grade 10 condition for nearly $16.5 million earlier this year. Collector interest in high-end Rayquaza items is expected to persist, especially as The Pokémon Company prepares to introduce a brand-new Mega Rayquaza card to the current game landscape.
