CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that the next mainline entry in its flagship fantasy role-playing series, The Witcher 4, is currently aiming for a release window in 2028.
The project timeline was revealed by CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski in a video message sent out to community members ahead of Gamescom 2026. Despite making the announcement while inviting fans to watch the event, Nowakowski clarified that the highly anticipated sequel will not be showcased during Gamescom's Opening Night Live presentation, as the team is not yet prepared to announce a firm release date.
Development on The Witcher 4 originally transitioned into full production in 2024, leaving a considerable window before the game reaches store shelves. Acknowledging the lengthy timeline, the studio executive asked fans to remain patient and allow the developers the necessary time to craft the title, reassuring players that the final product would be well worth their patience.
The upcoming game is being billed by studio leadership as CD Projekt Red’s most ambitious and expansive project to date, expanding upon concepts previously highlighted in tech demos. In a major departure for the franchise, Ciri will take center stage as the new primary protagonist, stepping into the lead role previously occupied by Geralt. The game is slated to offer a massive open-world setting alongside narrative-driven quest lines and refined action mechanics.
While players will have to wait several years for the fourth installment, the developer is offering narrative content to tide fans over. CD Projekt Red plans to debut the first gameplay footage of a new expansion, titled The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, during Opening Night Live. Scheduled to launch in 2027, this upcoming DLC is designed to serve as a story bridge connecting the events of The Witcher 3 with the beginning of the new saga in The Witcher 4.
