Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has publicly defended the ongoing workforce reductions across the Xbox gaming division, describing the cuts as a necessary streamlining effort. Under a major restructuring plan led by newly appointed executive Asha Sharma, the company intends to eliminate 3,200 jobs across fiscal years 2026 and 2027. Nearly 2,000 employees have already been laid off as Microsoft shuttered facilities and severed ties with multiple game development studios.
In a recent podcast appearance, Nadella voiced strong confidence in the brand's trajectory despite the significant headcount reductions. He stated that he feels extremely optimistic regarding the company's current intellectual property portfolio and studio roster. Nadella explained that the ongoing organizational changes are part of a targeted plan to return the gaming division to overall profitability during the current fiscal year while continuing to release major titles across PC and console ecosystems.
Disconnect Between Executive Strategy and Developer Realities
This executive optimism stands in sharp contrast to descriptions provided by current and former staff members, who characterize internal operations as chaotic. Developers report facing unrealistic targets and aggressive financial demands following the layoffs. At id Software, staff members noted that communication from corporate leadership has primarily focused on generating higher profit margins immediately, offering little guidance or stability regarding long-term project planning.
Similar disruptions have been reported at other high-profile Microsoft studios. Developer Obsidian Entertainment lost approximately 25% of its workforce shortly before being assigned to collaborate with Bethesda on a new Fallout game. Other teams face similar pressures as studio closures and downsizing continue across the entire gaming division.
Despite the widespread internal unrest and reduced headcounts, executive leadership insists that Microsoft remains committed to operating as a major platform holder and publisher for both Xbox consoles and PC. The company expects to finish its multi-year restructuring process by the end of fiscal year 2027.
