A fresh entry in the Dark Souls universe is set to arrive this fall with the upcoming release of Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning, a complete graphic novel collection scheduled to launch on September 29.
Published by Titan Comics, the 112-page collected edition combines all four previously published single issues of the series into a single comprehensive volume priced at $17.99 USD. The graphic novel features a narrative written by author George Mann, accompanied by dark and detailed illustrations provided by artist Maan House.
Rather than retelling the events from FromSoftware's video game series, Mother of Mourning delivers an entirely original story that expands the existing lore of the dark fantasy setting. The narrative follows the Knights of Mourning, a desperate order facing despair as the vital flame of their world steadily fades away.
In a frantic bid to discover a hero who can reignite the fading flame, the knightly order places their remaining hope in the Mother of Lilies. Legend speaks of this soulless, mummified saint as a figure capable of restoring harmony to the bleak world. The order believes that retrieving her lost soul will resurrect the saint and yield the champion necessary to guide them to solace. However, creeping insanity among the knights threatens to undermine their quest before it can succeed.
The upcoming graphic novel offers new narrative content for a gaming franchise that has remained largely inactive in recent years. Developer FromSoftware and publisher Namco Bandai first introduced players to the franchise when the original Dark Souls debuted on September 22, 2011. That initial title established the modern soulslike action RPG genre, earning a Mature rating for its dark fantasy themes, violence, partial nudity, and graphic depiction of blood.
The core gaming trilogy officially drew to a close with the launch of Dark Souls III in 2016. While Dark Souls: Remastered subsequently arrived in 2018 to bring the original title to modern consoles, FromSoftware has since turned its creative focus toward other projects. The studio's subsequent releases, including Sekiro and Elden Ring, expanded on the genre while leaving the main Dark Souls series on the bench. As a result, releases such as Mother of Mourning serve as the main path for fans seeking new lore in the beloved dark fantasy universe.
