Newly released in Early Access, indie RPG The Lantern of the Laughless Saint blends retro role-playing mechanics with erratic, unintentional humor driven by its unconventional dialogue camera. Developed by NerveLabs, the title draws heavy inspiration from classic Bethesda games like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and the Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion.
The game drops players onto a mysterious island filled with bizarre characters and surreal interactions. One of its most striking features is an unpredictable conversation camera that dynamically zooms into awkward framing choices during NPC interactions, highlighting facial flaws, ears, and strange angles rather than standard cinematic views.
Beginning in the starter town of Magdal's Rest, players encounter strange locals and undertake initial tasks, such as retrieving goods from dangerous surrounding roads for town merchants. The game's mechanics lean heavily into traditional RPG design, while its overall atmosphere focuses on a cast of eccentric cast-offs inhabiting a strange, unwelcoming realm.
NerveLabs plans to maintain an active development schedule for the title throughout its Early Access period. The studio aims to issue content updates every one to two weeks, with the goal of reaching a full 1.0 release within a year. The Lantern of the Laughless Saint is currently available on Steam.
