Hinterland Studio has announced a shift in its development priorities, placing primary focus back on expanding survival mode for The Long Dark over the next two years instead of immediately prioritizing its upcoming sequel, Blackfrost.
The decision follows the recent conclusion of Wintermute, the episodic narrative campaign for The Long Dark, which wrapped up with its fifth and final entry earlier this year. While the developer had previously announced Blackfrost in 2024 as the next major entry in the franchise, changing conditions across the broader games industry have prompted the team to adjust their immediate roadmap.
In a blog post shared on Steam, Hinterland explained that shifting market conditions heavily influenced the move. The studio pointed to volatile industry business models, geopolitical instability, lingering uncertainty surrounding next-generation console hardware, and a noticeable trend of consumers spending more time and money on familiar titles rather than purchasing unproven new releases.
To adapt to these trends, Hinterland has outlined a multi-year plan dedicated to supporting The Long Dark. This initiative will include routine bug fixes, general quality-of-life additions, and the integration of assets and regions originally introduced in Wintermute's final episode. Alongside free support, the studio plans to release two distinct paid downloadable content packs designed to expand the base game experience.
While specific details regarding the upcoming add-ons remain sparse, Hinterland noted that one expansion will follow a structure comparable to its previous Tales From The Far Territory expansion pass. Meanwhile, the second piece of DLC will experiment with a format different from prior releases.
Despite the strategic pivot, Hinterland emphasized that Blackfrost has not been canceled, and no staff layoffs have occurred. However, several team members have been reassigned internally from the sequel to support core survival updates and DLC production. The studio still intends to share a first look at Blackfrost gameplay before the end of the year.
