Supernatural action-adventure title Usual June will officially launch on October 28, bringing a seasonal mystery to PC players right in time for Halloween. Developer efforts are ramping up following the launch of a new playable demo on Steam earlier this week, offering fans an early preview of its combat loop and story setting.
The story follows June, a college student struggling to decide on her direction in life during a peaceful summer break. The tranquility vanishes when supernatural forces invade her town, starting with an assault by crystalline crabs on the local graveyard. Joined by her group of friends—including a ghost who accompanies her—June sets out to uncover why these bizarre creatures and spirits have suddenly appeared.
Mechanically, the game presents a traditional action-adventure formula focused on snappy melee combat. June defends herself using a unique, morphable wrench capable of stringing together diverse attack combinations. Fighting relies heavily on spatial awareness, requiring players to dodge and parry incoming blows rather than blocking them directly, resulting in dynamic encounters reminiscent of titles such as Hades and Kingdom Hearts.
The title intentionally eschews platforming elements, keeping movement entirely grounded within its tailored environments. Because the character lacks a dedicated jump mechanic, navigation emphasizes walking and positioning, drawing comparisons to structural design choices seen in Final Fantasy VII Remake. While this constraint might take time for some players to adjust to, it serves to maintain focus on cinematic pacing and tactical combat encounters.
Usual June features narrative contributions from writer Cara Ellison, who previously contributed to gaming publications. The game blends a cozy autumn aesthetic with an underlying sense of mystery, drawing stylistic parallels to atmospheric fiction like Over the Garden Wall. Ahead of its official release at the end of October, prospective players can download the demo or add the game to their Steam wishlist.
