Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a substantially overhauled weather system capable of simulating everything from physically accurate rainbows to full-scale hurricanes, according to Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering.
The new system is described as "more localized and persistent" than previous iterations, with fully dynamic cloudscapes that drift across the map. The game will include localized rain showers, wet ground and puddles that persist after rainfall, and rainbows that appear under specific lighting conditions. Shepherd detailed the hurricane experience in particular, explaining that the system combines heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospheric effects, and torrential rain to create an immersive effect where water drips from roofs and lampposts, thunder rumbles, and lightning illuminates the sky.
While the extent to which these weather systems will affect core gameplay remains unclear, it seems likely that storms will coincide with key missions such as car chases, boat sequences, or rooftop encounters. The dynamic weather could add significant atmosphere to both single-player and multiplayer experiences, particularly for GTA Online players who have already shown enthusiasm for weather-related content and mods.
Beyond weather, Rockstar has also significantly expanded the animal life in GTA 6. The game will feature 170 animal species in total, including approximately 60 bird species, over 30 land mammals, and various aquatic creatures such as manatees, flamingos, pelicans, sharks, rays, turtles, and jellyfish. This expansion builds on the detailed ecosystem work Rockstar completed for Red Dead Redemption 2.
These details emerged from a recent Game Informer feature. The weather and wildlife systems represent a substantial investment in environmental immersion for the open world, though how deeply they will integrate into core gameplay loops remains to be seen when the game launches.
