Grand Theft Auto 6's November 19, 2026 release date may prevent the highly anticipated title from earning a Game of the Year nomination at this year's The Game Awards, according to observations from Australian actress and former video game journalist Alanah Pearce.
Pearce highlighted the timing conflict in a recent YouTube video, noting that The Game Awards' eligibility cutoff has historically aligned with GTA 6's launch window. Last year's ceremony announced nominees on November 17, well before the game's scheduled arrival. If The Game Awards 2026 follows a similar schedule, with jury voting beginning in early November and nominees revealed mid-month, GTA 6 would fall outside the eligibility window and face nomination at The Game Awards 2027 instead.

The timing creates a practical challenge beyond administrative deadlines. Rockstar North co-head Ron Nelson previously stated that completing a full GTA 6 playthrough could exceed 80 hours, leaving jury members minimal time to experience the game before voting. Even if The Game Awards shifted voting to late November, the compressed timeline would be tight for evaluators to finish the campaign and form informed judgments.
The Game Awards could adjust its voting schedule to accommodate the release, though no such change has been announced. Event creator and host Geoff Keighley is aware of the massive audience attention GTA 6 could generate, particularly if the game secures multiple nominations. Pushing voting into the first week of December would give the jury adequate time to play before the ceremony on December 10, 2026.
If GTA 6 does miss this year's cutoff and competes in 2027, it could face competition from another major title—a scenario that mirrors 2018 when two Santa Monica Studio games competed in the same year. Other contenders for this year's Game of the Year award include titles like 007 First Light and Control Resonant, which could benefit from GTA 6's potential absence from the nomination pool. Regardless of scale, GTA 6's massive scope alone would not guarantee victory.
