Epic Games has unveiled a preview build of its launcher, rebuilt from the ground up and developed using what the company describes as 'vibe coding'. The new version is designed to be faster and more responsive than its predecessor, with a lighter footprint when running in the background.
In an official announcement, Epic acknowledged that traditional programming approaches are demanding, and opted instead for the vibe coding method to accelerate development. The launcher has been redesigned with a streamlined interface, described by the company as resembling a speedboat rather than a yacht. Despite the minimal feature set in this initial release, the launcher includes a shopping cart and other digital commerce capabilities.
Platform availability and performance claims
The preview build is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Epic emphasizes that the new launcher delivers faster load times and reduced system resource consumption while operating in the background. The company also claims the interface makes browsing and discovering games more straightforward, with customizable layouts that let users arrange elements according to their preferences.
Martin Keely, general manager of the Epic Games Store, provided additional technical details about the overhaul. He explained that the entire launcher has been reconstructed using a completely new technology stack. Both the shell—which handles the download manager and library functions—and the store architecture have been rewritten. Key features including the discover section and product detail pages were rebuilt as part of this comprehensive redesign.
AI acceleration at the company level
The use of vibe coding aligns with Epic's broader strategic direction. CEO Tim Sweeney announced this week that the company is pursuing what he termed 'maximum AI acceleration' across its operations. Sweeney has been vocal about this commitment, even engaging with social media accounts that support the initiative, including what appears to be an AI bot account roleplaying as a duck.
This AI-focused approach comes as Epic continues restructuring its workforce and operations. Earlier this year, the company conducted significant layoffs affecting over 1,000 employees. The new launcher represents one of the first major products to emerge under this AI-accelerated development philosophy.
The preview release invites users to test the launcher and compare its performance directly with alternatives. Epic's messaging emphasizes speed and responsiveness as the primary differentiators, though the company has not provided detailed technical specifications about how vibe coding specifically contributed to performance improvements. The full feature set is expected to expand beyond this initial preview release.
