A solo modder has released a custom campaign expansion for Baldur's Gate 3 in beta, inserting an entirely new chapter between the RPG's second and third acts. The mod, called Act Two Expansion, sends players and their party through The Chionthar Wilds while the Absolute's Army marches toward the city that gives the series its name.
SquallyDaBeanz, the creator, explained the design philosophy behind the addition. The goal was to preserve the base game's narrative structure rather than compete with the climactic moments of Act Two. Act Three's Rivington already functions as a breather despite looming threats, offering tension relief and pacing changes after Act Two's intensity. The new mod aims for something similar but structured more like the game's opening act—a large explorable area where side activities exist alongside the main quest without feeling disconnected from the larger conflict. As the modder put it, players know the army is advancing, but pursuing detours feels natural within the world.
The expansion maintains momentum toward its conclusion, ensuring players re-enter Act Three with the right mindset for the final confrontation. This careful pacing prevents the new content from feeling like an arbitrary insertion into the established story.
Technical challenges and learning curve
Developing the mod presented significant technical hurdles. SquallyDaBeanz noted that the Baldur's Gate 3 modding community is still learning the engine's intricacies years after Larian Studios released official modding tools. Many toolkit bugs complicated development, though the modder acknowledged the community's contribution in creating features freely. Documentation remains sparse, forcing much of the work to rely on reverse-engineering how Larian implemented systems in the base game, though community members like Lizardphunk have begun creating helpful resources.
Despite prior modding experience from work on Skywind, the Skyrim-to-Morrowind conversion project, SquallyDaBeanz had to expand their skill set considerably. Previous work focused mainly on level design and set dressing, but this project demanded learning scripting, enemy behavior systems, custom items, and cutscene creation. The modder acknowledged these elements still need refinement.
The mod is available now on Nexus Mods in two versions: a main download for full playthroughs starting from the beginning, and a quickstart version that warps players directly to The Chionthar Wilds. A full 1.0 release is in development, with patches already planned based on community feedback and bug reports.
