Developer Moonless Formless has officially launched its dark action-RPG Withering Realms into early access on Steam today.
Positioned as a follow-up to the studio's previous title Withering Rooms, the new game is set during an alternate 1920s era where World War I came to a sudden halt following an occult disaster. Players assume the role of a spirit child who rides on the shoulders of an uncanny, living marionette. This mechanical companion serves as the player's primary combat tool against the dark forces plaguing the land.
The developers describe the title's design as a blend between top-down exploration and challenging gothic action combat. Players can customize their puppet's abilities by replacing its right arm with various mystical items, such as flame-belching candlesticks or heavy chain-bound stones, while casting spells directly from the marionette's back.
Alternatively, players can switch to navigating as freelance investigator Althea Crossley. While less effective in direct combat, Crossley relies on lockpicking, stealth, and dialogue interrogations to progress. Her gameplay incorporates a mix of three-quarter top-down angles and fixed-camera perspectives reminiscent of classic survival horror titles. Playing as Crossley also grants access to Penwyll, a central town where players can purchase upgrades and weapon modifications for their doll.
The game features diverse unlockable environments, including decayed estates, foggy swamps, sinister caves, eerie forests, and overgrown graveyards. Over 110 enemy types inhabit these locations, ranging from hostile chambermaids to bizarre monsters with television screens made of eyes. Locations can be visited during both daytime and nighttime, with the dark hours bringing greater danger alongside hidden story details.
Despite being an early access release, Withering Realms currently features a full campaign that can be played from start to finish. Playtests indicate that a full playthrough spans anywhere from 15 to 42 hours. The initial version boasts roughly 50 unique weapons and 70 talismans. Moonless Formless plans to utilize the early access period to introduce additional game modes, expanded endgame content, extra localization support, and general stability improvements.
