Cloud Imperium Games has pushed back the launch of its long-awaited single-player space simulator, Squadron 42, to the second quarter of 2027. Studio head Chris Roberts explained that the delay is intended to prevent the title from being overshadowed by Rockstar Games' upcoming blockbuster, Grand Theft Auto 6.
The developer had previously confirmed a late 2026 release schedule as recently as CitizenCon 2024, aiming for a fourth-quarter launch. However, a recent blog post by Roberts revealed a change of plans, citing concerns over competing with Grand Theft Auto 6 for media coverage and consumer attention during the autumn window.
Roberts noted that after twelve years of effort, risking a launch alongside Rockstar's massive release was unwarranted. Although GTA 6 is not arriving on PC this November, he stated that gaming outlets and content creators will still prioritize it heavily, drastically limiting exposure for other titles. He described Squadron 42 as a spiritual successor to Wing Commander, with core development having started in 2014 following initial studio setup and early module releases in 2013.
Before the revised spring 2027 launch, Cloud Imperium plans to hold an exclusive preview event in October for a select group of early backers and content creators. A more definitive launch date is expected to be announced shortly after that hands-on period.
Squadron 42 serves as the narrative-driven single-player counterpart to Star Citizen and has experienced multiple delays over its prolonged development history. The project features a high-profile Hollywood voice cast including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, Ben Mendelsohn, and Mark Strong.
Alongside the release date change, Cloud Imperium introduced a new in-game item for its fanbase. The studio made the Anvil Odin capital ship available as a concept pledge priced at $5,000 (£3,700). Since the vehicle is not yet finished or available in-game, purchasers are temporarily granted access to an Idris P until its eventual release.
