The Righteous Fire Occultist stands as a dependable league starter for Path of Exile 3.29, offering fast campaign progression and a smooth transition into the Death's Oath endgame variant. The build combines speed, damage output, and survivability through a passive playstyle that scales effectively with modest gear investment, making it suitable for both newcomers and experienced players tackling solo self-found or hardcore modes.
Righteous Fire is a unique skill that damages both the caster and nearby enemies simultaneously. The core challenge lies in offsetting the self-inflicted burn damage through multiple layers of mitigation. Fire resistance forms the foundation of this defense, supplemented by life regeneration sources including the Vitality aura, Stone Golem minion, the Occultist's Vile Bastion Ascendancy passive, and crucially, the Fire Mastery that grants one life per second regeneration for each one percent of uncapped fire resistance. This last modifier proves essential for sustaining Righteous Fire throughout the campaign.
Two additional Ascendancy notables amplify the build's effectiveness. Spiritual Command causes all minion attack speed scaling to affect the player, providing up to 110 percent increased attack speed by the end of Act 10. This transforms Shield Charge into a rapid and satisfying movement option. Spiritual Aid similarly applies minion damage scaling to the player, multiplying the damage output of brand-based abilities used during leveling.
Campaign Progression and Gem Links
The leveling process begins with a temporary Ranger character created solely to acquire the Momentum Support Gem from early vendors. After killing Hillock and gathering linked equipment from town vendors, the player stashes these items and creates the actual Witch character for the build.
At level 2, equip a wand and shield, then use Fireball linked with Arcane Surge. By level 5, expand the setup to Fireball with Volley and Elemental Proliferation, add Shield Charge with Momentum, introduce Frostblink with Arcane Surge, and slot in Flame Wall. An Amber Amulet becomes necessary at this stage to meet the strength requirement for Shield Charge. At level 8, add Faster Attacks to Shield Charge and purchase Combustion and Efficacy to level in a weapon swap slot. For boss encounters, swapping Volley for Combustion on Fireball provides a damage boost.
Level 10 introduces Vitality and Clarity auras. During this phase, collect and sell all unidentified rare equipment to accumulate Orbs of Transmutation, which are essential for crafting fire resistance onto gear in preparation for activating Righteous Fire at level 19.
In Act 2, Citrine amulets and Ruby Rings begin appearing in vendor shops from level 16 onward. Purchase and craft the best rolls using essences and alchemy orbs. The bandit choice should favor Alira for 15 percent resistance to all elements. At level 19, activate Righteous Fire by ensuring sufficient fire resistance and life recovery. Equip two Ruby Rings and craft fire resistance on every available piece of equipment with an open suffix. The gem setup becomes Fireball with Volley and Elemental Proliferation, Righteous Fire with Efficacy and Elemental Focus, Shield Charge with Faster Attacks and Momentum, Frostblink with Arcane Surge, Vitality, Clarity, and Wave of Conviction. Purchase Cruelty at this point for later use.
Mid-Campaign Adjustments
Act 3 brings a significant change at level 28. After defeating Gravicius, replace Fireball entirely with Armageddon Brand linked to Elemental Proliferation, Combustion, and Cruelty. Righteous Fire remains supported by Efficacy and Elemental Focus. Shield Charge keeps Faster Attacks and Momentum. Add Purity of Elements to the aura setup alongside Vitality. Wave of Conviction and Flammability provide additional damage when needed.
By Act 4 at level 38, the build reaches its final leveling configuration. Armageddon Brand gains Immolate as a fourth support gem. Righteous Fire adds Increased Area of Effect to its links. A Stone Golem supported by Flame Golem, Elemental Army, and Minion Life joins the setup to provide additional life regeneration and damage scaling. Purity of Elements remains active, with Wave of Conviction and Flammability available for tough encounters. Once a five-linked item becomes available, support Armageddon Brand with Cruelty for enhanced damage output.
From level 38 onward, progression becomes straightforward. As maximum life increases, the burn damage from Righteous Fire scales proportionally, but maintaining sufficient life regeneration per second through fire resistance keeps the character healthy. The build carries this configuration smoothly through to maps.
Gear Acquisition and Crafting Strategy
Gear progression relies heavily on vendor purchases and crafting with basic currency items. Prioritize hybrid armor and evasion bases for body armor and helmets, as these provide substantially better survivability compared to random bases. Calling wands, which carry an implicit bonus to minion damage, become available in shops from level 20 onward. Acquire one and craft it using Orbs of Alteration until hitting increased fire damage, damage over time multiplier, fire damage over time multiplier, or minion damage modifiers.
Currency management is critical during leveling. Sell unidentified equipment to obtain Orbs of Transmutation, identified equipment for Orbs of Alteration, and Transmutation or Alteration orbs for Wisdom Scrolls when needed. Matching gem and socket colors grants 10 percent quality to the gem; use chromatics on shields to align Shield Charge or Faster Attacks with their sockets.
Gambling gold at town vendors provides armor upgrades. Prioritize body armor with high armor and evasion values, boots with movement speed, and life plus resistances on all other slots. At level 25, gamble boots specifically, as vendors can offer 20 percent movement speed or four-link sockets or both. If obtaining a four-link or exceptional boots without movement speed, benchcraft 10 to 14 percent movement speed using an open prefix and three Orbs of Augmentation. From level 44 onward, 30 percent movement speed boots become available through gambling.
Playstyle and Execution
The playstyle remains straightforward and passive. Upon entering each zone, activate Righteous Fire immediately. Then use Shield Charge and Frostblink to navigate while occasionally casting Armageddon Brand for damage. Deploy Flammability and Wave of Conviction when additional damage is required for tougher encounters. The skill rotation requires minimal attention, allowing players to focus on positioning and resource management.

A complete solo self-found campaign run with this build can be completed in approximately four hours with minimal deaths, demonstrating its reliability and speed. The build's passive nature and straightforward execution make it accessible to players of all experience levels while maintaining the damage output necessary for efficient progression.
