Developer Bellring Games has introduced the Mercenary as an accessible frontline class in its dark fantasy extraction ARPG, Mistfall Hunter, featuring a versatile Sword and Shield build designed to absorb heavy attacks while maintaining steady damage output.
The Mercenary is one of six playable classes in the game, capable of wielding either a Two-Handed Greathammer or a Sword and Shield combo. For beginners, pairing the sword with a shield offers defensive stability alongside reliable damage. Core abilities include Impalement for forward thrusts, standard frontal Blocking that reduces incoming damage by default at the cost of Energy, and Whirling Cut, a mobility skill delivering spinning slashes. Additionally, Shield Slam lets players leap forward with Super Armor to crush targets and slow enemy movement.
Optimizing this defensive archetype relies on specific Talent tree nodes. Selecting Shield Buildup converts basic attack stacks into Shield Pressure, granting Momentum at six stacks to execute Shockwave Strike—a high-impact shield bash that lowers skill cooldowns. The Perfect Defense talent allows regular blocks to convert into Perfect Blocks, granting instant Momentum without building stacks. Players can further bolster their resilience with Sturdy Shield, which stacks physical resistance up to ten times via Indomitable Will, while Opportunist increases movement speed during blocks. Offensive talents like Fearless add a dash component to Whirling Cut, while Bounce and Raging Earth Shake allow Shield Slam to be cast directly from a block stance to stun opponents.
To maximize combat efficiency, players can enhance their Mercenary with stat affixes obtained from Sigrid the Tavernwoman or gear equipped with Agate, Amethyst, Moonstone, and Peridot gems. Drinking pre-match beverages like the free Mortal Tonic grants temporary buffs, with higher tavern tiers unlocking stronger bonuses. Vital affixes include Bulwark, which lowers blocking Energy costs and boosts damage reduction, and Aegis for flat defense and physical resistance. To offset melee mobility constraints, the Seeker affix provides stacking speed boosts on hit, while Strife ramps up close-range damage when surrounded by multiple foes.
Mastering the Sword and Shield Mercenary requires careful Energy management, as continuous blocking rapidly exhausts resources needed for counterattacks. By combining timed Perfect Blocks with high-damage skill rotations, players can construct a balanced frontline fighter capable of thriving in both solo expeditions and team engagements across Mistfall Hunter's battlegrounds.
