Future mainline Pokémon games, including the announced Generation 10 titles Pokémon Winds and Waves, could gradually move away from the traditional turn-based battle system that has defined the franchise for nearly three decades. Kazumasa Iwao, director of the free-to-play title Pokémon Champions, recently indicated that the development team now has the creative freedom to overhaul combat mechanics in main releases without abandoning veteran players.
In a recent video published on Game Freak’s YouTube channel, Iwao explained how the existence of Pokémon Champions enables this design shift. The spin-off serves as the dedicated competitive hub for the franchise, preserving the classic battle structures that originated with 1996's Pokémon Red and Green. Iwao noted that maintaining this classic foundation in a single, ongoing game allows Game Freak to introduce mechanics changes "little by little" in future main titles, safe in the knowledge that traditional competitive play remains accessible.
While the fundamental battle mechanics have remained largely consistent since the franchise debuted, Game Freak has consistently tweaked combat across generations. Historical updates include introducing new elemental types like Dark, Steel, and Fairy, adding held items, and implementing generation-specific mechanics like Tera types. More recent releases have experimented with larger structural shifts, such as the automated overworld battles in 2022's Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and the real-time combat system featured in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. These potential modifications reflect a broader industry pattern, with other major role-playing franchises like Final Fantasy transitioning away from classic turn-based fighting in recent years.
Details regarding Pokémon Winds and Waves remain sparse following its announcement earlier this year. Serving as a direct follow-up to Scarlet and Violet, the twin titles will mark the tenth generation of the franchise and are slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027. Aside from a behind-the-scenes preview shared in May, official announcements have only confirmed the three Generation 10 starter Pokémon: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua.
It remains unclear whether the combat adjustments hinted at by Iwao will begin immediately with Pokémon Winds and Waves or arrive in later generations. However, with Pokémon Champions providing a permanent home for traditional battles, Game Freak is well-positioned to modernize its core RPG entries as the 2027 launch approaches.
