CD Projekt Red spent two years iterating on the Chimera tank boss fight featured in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty before finalizing the cinematic encounter. Studio leaders described the battle as one of the most complex set pieces in the entire expansion, requiring continuous collaboration across several development departments to get right.
Speaking on an episode of the studio's AnsweRED Podcast, game director Gabe Amatangelo, creative director Igor Sarzyński, and art director Paweł Mielniczuk detailed the extensive production hurdles behind the fight. The sequence, which features a massive military vehicle chasing players before settling into an arena showdown, took a prolonged effort to balance visual flair with interactive combat.
Amatangelo explained that the Chimera encounter served as a critical nexus point for game design, narrative pacing, art, and worldbuilding. Achieving harmony between these elements proved difficult. Early iterations frequently skewed too far toward one discipline, leaving the sequence feeling either like a pure gameplay challenge or an overly scripted art demonstration. To resolve these issues, the directors went through the encounter beat by beat to calibrate the experience.
Rebuilding the Machine
To ensure the tank conveyed immediate dread, the team drew inspiration from real-world military equipment. Amatangelo and Mielniczuk regularly exchanged videos of heavy weaponry, including miniguns, focusing on designing overwhelming sound design and visuals that would terrify players when the machine rises up.
The physical model of the tank also went through extensive redesigns over the two-year period. Mielniczuk, who hosted the podcast episode, revealed that the team overhauled the tank four separate times, repeatedly changing its weapons, equipment, and visual features to align with the shifting gameplay requirements.
Because of the continuous reworks and sheer complexity of the model, Sarzyński noted that the Chimera was likely one of the most expensive individual art assets CD Projekt Red has ever created. The team's efforts ultimately highlight the vast time and resource commitments needed to produce top-tier set pieces for modern blockbuster games.
