CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the next mainline installment in The Witcher series is targeting a release in 2028.
The launch window was revealed by the studio's joint-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, in a developer update video posted across the franchise's social media channels. The announcement was made to address fan expectations prior to Gamescom Opening Night Live. Although the Polish studio will participate in the convention, Nowakowski clarified that the fourth Witcher title will skip the event entirely to prevent unverified rumors from spreading.
During the update, Nowakowski also discussed the project pipeline, highlighting a new expansion for The Witcher 3 scheduled for release next year. That content update is anticipated to serve as a narrative bridge leading into the upcoming game. Addressing the long wait ahead, the joint-CEO asked followers to allow the development staff sufficient time to build the RPG, assuring fans that the patience required will ultimately be rewarded.
A 2028 launch plan places the title several years in the future, meaning fans will need to wait a significant duration before seeing final gameplay. Moreover, game schedules remain subject to change, as evidenced by the multiple delays that affected CD Projekt Red's previous major release, Cyberpunk 2077, prior to its debut.
Additionally, the projected timeframe carries implications for physical distribution. With Sony Interactive Entertainment halting PlayStation disc production after January 2028, a launch later that year makes it increasingly likely that the fourth Witcher entry will be distributed exclusively as a digital release.
