Magic: The Gathering has confirmed its first Universes Beyond set for 2027 will be a Marvel collaboration, though not in the way many players expected. Rather than adapting an existing Marvel property like the X-Men or Young Avengers, the set will center on an entirely new character and storyline developed exclusively for this crossover between the two franchises.
The set is titled Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, and it represents a unique approach to the Universes Beyond program. While previous crossovers have drawn from established Marvel lore, this project creates original material that exists within both the Magic and Marvel universes simultaneously. The new character will debut in a Marvel Comics release scheduled for February 2027, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, before becoming the focus of the Magic set.
A Dark Marvel Setting
Darkhold Destiny explores the darker corners of the Marvel Universe, drawing heavily on supernatural themes. The set incorporates vampires, devils, witches, and werewolves, giving it aesthetic similarities to Magic's Innistrad block. This thematic choice makes particular sense given that the Darkhold itself is Marvel's equivalent to the Necronomicon, the grimoire central to H.P. Lovecraft's horror fiction. Scholars believe Marvel's version was directly inspired by Lovecraft's creation and its role in classic horror storytelling.
Despite the emphasis on original content, the set will feature several familiar Marvel characters. References in promotional materials point to the return of Blade, described as a "vampire-hunting vampire," alongside sorcerers and dimensional travelers that strongly suggest appearances by Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, and Agatha Harkness. Two characters confirmed early are Magik and Hela, indicating they will play significant roles in the set's narrative and mechanics.
Release Timeline and Products
Magic: The Gathering has set April 9, 2027 as the official release date for Darkhold Destiny, with the prerelease scheduled for April 2, 2027. This timing means the set will arrive roughly two months after Naucitis, the preceding set, concludes its time in the spotlight. The preview window, typically beginning several weeks before full release, will compress this window even further.
The product lineup includes multiple Commander Decks and Scene Boxes, with both formats explicitly confirmed for the set. Standard booster packs and collector boosters are expected to follow the typical Magic release structure, though the complete product range has not yet been announced.
Early Card Reveals
Approximately twenty cards were unveiled during the Darkhold Destiny announcement, providing an early glimpse at the set's mechanics and flavor. While many of these cards are tokens or lands, they confirm the presence of characters including Hela, Gargantos, and Magik. The spoiled cards also reveal Darkchild, the demonic alter ego of Magik, suggesting the set will explore multiple facets of its featured characters.
The 2027 Magic calendar will feature six Universes Beyond sets in total, compared to seven sets in 2026. Darkhold Destiny's April release positions it as a significant early entry in the year's crossover slate, giving players substantial time to engage with the new character and world before subsequent sets arrive.
