The creator of a major Total War: Warhammer 3 overhaul has taken the drastic step of intentionally corrupting their own mod in response to unauthorized reuploads that incorporate artificial intelligence.
Venris, who leads development on SFO: Grimhammer 3, announced the decision in a Patreon post after growing frustrated with third parties uploading the mod without permission and using AI in the process. The corruption is designed to render the mod non-functional when obtained through these unauthorized channels, forcing players to download the official version instead. Venris warned that if the problem continues, the entire mod will be made private, restricting access to approved users only.
In their statement, Venris emphasized that the mod represents nearly a decade of work for the community and the Warhammer fantasy setting. They made clear they do not consent to others distributing their creation, particularly for AI-related purposes, and stressed support for modders over artificial intelligence. The creator confirmed that future updates will continue to release exclusively through Steam Workshop, as has been the standard practice.
The SFO series of mods aims to enhance the Total War: Warhammer games by increasing lore accuracy while maintaining engaging gameplay. Grimhammer 3 achieves this through combat rebalancing, adjusted battle lengths, and new unit abilities. The mod receives regular updates, with the most recent major release before this incident being the Call of Bretonnia update.
The situation reflects broader tensions in the modding community regarding generative AI. Platforms like Nexus Mods have recently implemented stricter labeling requirements for mods created using AI tools, acknowledging creator concerns about unauthorized use of their work in AI training and generation processes. Venris's approach represents one modder's direct response to protect their intellectual property and maintain control over how their work is distributed and used.
