Microsoft has rolled out a new feature that permits players to transform supported physical Xbox game discs into permanent digital licenses without having to repurchase the titles. Originally unveiled during the Xbox Gamescom 2026 event, the capability is currently being previewed by members of the Xbox Insider program ahead of a broader public release.
The testing phase began on August 31, 2026, specifically targeting participants in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead Insider rings. Console owners must ensure their systems are updated to the latest preview software to test the conversion system. While Microsoft has not set a firm date for a general public launch, thousands of physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles are already supported, with plans to expand the roster over time.
To convert a title, users must insert an eligible game disc into the optical drive of an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console. After the system installs the game, players can open the menu options for the title and select the prompt to claim a digital license. Once confirmed, the system attaches a digital entitlement to the user's Xbox account, allowing the game to launch from the internal drive without requiring the physical media to remain in the tray.
Despite granting a digital entitlement, the process leaves the original physical disc fully functional for normal gameplay on other systems. However, Microsoft has implemented safeguards to prevent duplicate digital redemptions. If a player converts a disc to a digital license and subsequently sells or trades the physical disc to another user, the second owner will be unable to claim another digital entitlement from that same disc.
The conversion process also offers enhanced benefits for cross-platform play. If a converted game supports the Xbox Play Anywhere initiative, obtaining the digital license unlocks access to the corresponding Windows PC edition at no extra cost. Players should note, however, that not every game disc is compatible with the conversion tool, and unsupported titles will trigger an error message if redemption is attempted.
