Cloud Imperium Games has officially delayed Squadron 42, the long-in-development single-player companion title to Star Citizen. Originally targeted for a late 2026 launch, the narrative action game has now been pushed back to the second quarter of 2027.
Studio founder Chris Roberts explained the shift in a public blog post, attributing the delay directly to the anticipated impact of Grand Theft Auto 6. Roberts expressed reluctance to launch the project into what he described as an attention buzz saw generated by Rockstar Games' impending blockbuster. Even though Grand Theft Auto 6 is not slated to hit PC platforms immediately upon its debut, Roberts emphasized that news outlets and online content creators will likely focus overwhelmingly on the release, leaving minimal room for other gaming news.
The new Q2 2027 target alters commitments made at CitizenCon 2024, where the studio had pledged to ship the game in the fourth quarter of 2026 around the in-game Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. Roberts defended the scheduling adjustment by pointing out that twelve years of development effort have gone into the title since work began, framing it as a major spiritual successor to the iconic Wing Commander franchise that requires a clear promotional window.
To keep the community engaged during the extended wait, Cloud Imperium Games plans to give a small cohort of original backers and long-standing Star Citizen creators access to a playable version of Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10. The studio noted that further details regarding launch plans will be shared during this event, with a specific release date expected shortly afterward.
Work on Squadron 42 officially began back in 2014, following a year spent opening development studios, recruiting staff, and releasing the initial Hangar module for Star Citizen in 2013. The standalone story campaign was initially intended to release in 2014, meaning the newly established timeline pushes the project past a full decade of delays.
Beyond its extended history, the game is notable for featuring a prominent ensemble of Hollywood actors. The cast features voice and motion-capture work from Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill, along with comic actor Eric Wareheim.
