Organizers of Gamescom have detailed their long-term growth strategy for the convention, revealing that exhibition space for 2026 is completely sold out despite broader economic headwinds across the video game industry. The upcoming event in Cologne is positioned to set new performance records while combining on-site attendance with digital broadcasts for worldwide viewers.
In an interview discussing the show's future, Tim Endres, Director of Gamescom at Koelnmesse, and Stefan Heikhaus, Director of Gamescom and Events at game – The German Games Industry Association, explained how feedback drives their planning process. Both executives noted that while portions of the global gaming market face documented struggles, publisher interest in Gamescom remains robust. The unprecedented demand across all sectors has prompted organizers to already begin work on expanding physical exhibition space for the 2027 edition.
Attendees visiting the venue or watching online will see several new programming additions in 2026. The show will host Gamescom GDQ, marking the first European speedrunning event organized by Games Done Quick. The performance will be streamed globally on GDQ channels alongside the live presentation. Organizers are also bringing the Gamescom dev event closer to the main experience, continuing their partnership with IGN for the Gamescom Awesome Indies showcase, and expanding community-focused offerings such as the social stage.
Coordinating an event of this scale requires year-round preparation behind the scenes. Endres highlighted the complex logistics involved in managing visitor flow, security controls, and hall routing to prevent stair and escalator bottlenecks. To improve attendee navigation, organizers developed an interactive wayfinding system on the official website. The digital map tracks user locations and features custom filters for specific interests, including Asian pop culture content, free water dispensers, and accessible facilities.
Heikhaus emphasized that post-event feedback directly shapes hall planning, signage, and digital orientation for subsequent years. For both directors, the most rewarding aspect of the project is watching months of preparation come to life. Endres and Heikhaus cited major milestones like Gamescom Opening Night Live, as well as exploring the diverse floor space featuring both high-budget projects and independent developer booths, as key moments that highlight the event's global reach.
