Subnautica 2 is set to receive its version 1.2 patch, dubbed the "Buddy System" update, bringing positional voice chat, direct trading, and revived cooperative mechanics on August 19.
The headline addition is a proximity-based voice chat system. Sound volume now adjusts based on distance between teammates, with voices taking on a distorted, radio-like quality as players move farther apart. Complementing the audio changes is a new emote system, allowing players to express themselves using hand gestures such as thumbs up, thumbs down, clapping, and fist raises.
Cooperative logistics have also been simplified. Rather than dropping resources on the seafloor to exchange them, players can now open a direct trading menu when standing near a companion. Furthermore, a new revive mechanic lets players share oxygen with downed teammates to bring them back into action before time expires.
Additional content includes two fresh player avatars, additional suit color options, and throwable tracking tags designed to help locate dropped items or mark specific locations. Holding a tracking tag at the time of death also expands the signal radius of the player's blackbox.
Finally, the update brings user interface enhancements, such as dynamic HUD icons that shrink when off-center, improved recipe pinning, better visual feedback for base construction, and general bug fixes.
