Bellring Games' dark fantasy extraction ARPG Mistfall Hunter offers players six distinct classes, with the Withered Knight serving as a versatile frontline option. Selecting a Polearm and Shield setup allows this exiled holy fighter to balance active damage mitigation, burst execution, and party support.
The foundation of the Polearm and Shield playstyle relies on managing the class passive mechanic, Judgment and Wither. Landing three consecutive Light Strikes charges the spear with sacred energy, applying a Wither mark to targeted enemies. Knights can then detonate this mark using heavy attacks or specialized defensive thrusts for massive execution damage. While basic light attacks offer thrusts and broad swipes, holding down the block button charges up to three tiers of heavy counter-attacks, progressing from simple shield bashes to high-impact jumping strikes.
For active skills, Spear Barrage delivers a rapid series of thrusts ending in a knockdown, making it ideal for interrupting opponents while rapidly applying Light Strike charges. The Intervene ability enhances mobility by allowing the knight to rush toward an opponent or ally, knocking back foes and bestowing temporary protective shields. Additionally, equipping Sacred Bulwark creates a massive frontal energy wall that negates incoming damage and blocks enemy movement, which can be re-cast to push opponents back.
Talent selection should emphasize defense and combo efficiency. Picking Polearm and Shield Specialization unlocks an extra skill slot on the weapon tree. Core nodes such as Rising Morale and Momentum Shift accelerate heavy attack charges when using skills or dodging while guarding. Meanwhile, Shield Wall Slam adds damage and execution properties to defensive rushes, and Defensive Shift grants mobility while holding Sacred Bulwark. Group players should also invest in Guardian, Swift Vanguard, and Succor to expand team shield ranges, grant speed buffs, and safely revive downed allies.
To complete the build, players can optimize affixes through Sigrid's Tavern Victory Wine and socketed gear gems like Agate or Moonstone. Speed-boosting affixes like Seeker prevent targets from kiting in combat, while Burst increases Wither execution damage. For defense, Aegis boosts overall physical protection and Bulwark lowers stamina costs when guarding. If slippery ranged opponents keep their distance, players can briefly switch to a secondary Greatsword equipped with the Thorn-Guide skill to pull enemies close before returning to spear strikes.
