Creative Assembly plans to support Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as a single, continuously expanding strategy title rather than producing multiple sequels.
This design decision marks a clear shift from the developer's previous strategy with the original fantasy-themed Total War: Warhammer sub-series, which spanned three separate mainline entries. The upcoming title shifts the series into Games Workshop's futuristic science-fiction setting for the first time. Speaking in an interview with PC Gamer, battle product owner Dave Petry explained that building a single, long-term title felt like the right path forward given the sheer scale of the setting's galactic map.
Rather than dividing the experience across distinct releases, Creative Assembly intends to maintain the upcoming game as a unified sandbox. Petry stated that the studio plans to deliver major post-launch content along with updates of varying sizes over time. He drew comparisons to the massive Immortal Empires sandbox mode from the fantasy trilogy, emphasizing that the development team wants to create a single central destination where players can access the complete experience rather than being siphoned off into isolated entries.
According to Petry, maintaining a single living game also offers clear practical advantages for ongoing development. Working within the same digital framework allows the studio to address technical issues and refine core mechanics more efficiently, while growing the game alongside its community. The focus will remain on expanding the sandbox environment to provide players with numerous ways to engage with the galactic war.
At release, Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will offer four customizable factions for players to command: the iconic Space Marines, the Astra Militarum, the Orks, and the Aeldari. Looking beyond launch, the developers are already contemplating future content additions, including specialized Space Marine chapters such as the Space Wolves, alongside faction options like Chaos Space Marines and Genestealers.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently scheduled to be released in 2027. Ahead of its eventual launch, PC strategy players can already add the title to their wishlists on Steam.
