Sony Interactive Entertainment is signaling a sharp departure from its recent PC release strategy, using a new promotional video to emphasize that its primary single-player titles will remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5.
Published on Monday under the title "Only On PS5," the 30-second trailer showcases a mix of current and upcoming console releases. The footage highlights available games such as Astro Bot, Gran Turismo 7, Saros, and Ghost of Yotei, alongside anticipated titles including Marvel’s Wolverine and God of War Laufey. Throughout the trailer, narration reinforces that these experiences can only be accessed on PlayStation hardware, effectively confirming they will not receive PC versions.
This marketing push aligns with reports from May indicating that PlayStation Studios will restrict narrative-focused single-player games to its own hardware due to lower-than-expected sales on PC platforms. Sony first expanded onto Steam with the original Helldivers in 2015 and eventually published over 20 games on PC. Major releases in this initiative included both entries in The Last of Us series, recent God of War installments, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, and Insomniac Games' Spider-Man titles. However, recent PC releases have faced technical challenges, compounding the company's reassessment.
The renewed emphasis on console exclusivity comes during a challenging financial climate for players. Driven by ongoing memory shortages, Sony recently raised the price of the base PS5 to $649.99, marking a $150 increase from its original launch price six years ago.
Additionally, consumer frustration has grown following Sony's announcement that it will phase out physical game disc manufacturing by January 2028. The shift toward a digital-only marketplace has raised ownership concerns, especially after Sony previously removed hundreds of paid movie titles from the PlayStation Network and cut physical media from its Crunchyroll store. With digital purchases representing software licenses rather than true ownership, the decision to withhold games from PC adds another layer of tension for the gaming community.
