Developer The Wild Gentlemen and publisher Kwalee have announced that their 1970s-themed sci-fi horror game, RetroSpace, will launch on October 1, 2026.
Set aboard a retro-styled space station named the Aurora, the game puts players in the role of a 3D-printed clone janitor attempting to survive after the facility is engulfed by a sentient black hole. Gameplay revolves around navigating hazards—including mutated flora, aggressive creatures, and active station defense systems—using a mix of stealth tactics, direct combat, and improvised solutions.
The game's environment functions like a Metroidvania, featuring a central non-lethal zone alongside interconnected paths, secret routes, and temporal anomalies that shift the station across different time periods. Players can also outfit their character with biological upgrades known as "mutamods," granting abilities like shadowy camouflage, host possession, and additional limbs. However, acquiring these traits risks triggering physical or mental side effects.
Failure is built into the game's mechanics: when a character dies, the station produces a replacement clone. Players must then locate their previous corpse to recover lost equipment while managing potential physical drawbacks caused by repeated cloning. Studio The Wild Gentlemen previously developed animal-focused detective titles, including the Chicken Police series and Moses & Plato: Last Train to Clawville.
