Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack are set to launch Mortal Shell II on August 20, 2026, delivering an expanded follow-up to their 2020 indie action RPG. Releasing on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for $49.99, the sequel builds on its predecessor’s foundations with refined combat mechanics, expanded world design, and deeper character customization options.
Returning to the dark fantasy realm of Fallgrim, the campaign follows a new protagonist known as the Harbinger. Players are tasked with retrieving the Ova of a mysterious cosmic entity named the Undermether. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game presents a gloomy visual style across varied environments, ranging from ruined castles and desolate marshlands to forgotten towns. While the story offers a simpler, more direct narrative progression, the atmospheric world design remains a central highlight.
Combat has undergone substantial mechanical changes, most notably the complete removal of the traditional stamina system. This change encourages aggressive play and continuous engagement rather than hit-and-run tactics. The parry mechanics have also been overhauled to reward multi-hit counters with striking ripostes. Players now have access to eight unique shells—double the original selection—alongside six sidearms, including long-range options like shotguns and rocket launchers, complemented by dedicated skill trees for melee and ranged gear.
World design stands out as one of the sequel's strongest elements, featuring heavily interconnected maps filled with hidden passages, environmental puzzles, and secret loot. Drawing design inspiration from large-scale action RPGs like Elden Ring, the exploration rewards thorough searching across every region. Boss encounters have also seen notable visual and structural upgrades over the first title, particularly during the late-game stages.
Despite these enhancements, the title experiences a few drawbacks, primarily concerning enemy variety. Players face recycled foes with limited move sets moving from the opening zones into mid-game areas, which can cause combat encounters to feel repetitive. Performance on PC is generally smooth with high framerates on modern hardware, despite minor screen tearing. Additionally, while voice acting fits the dark tone, the musical score plays a relatively subtle role.
A complete playthrough takes approximately 30 to 40 hours for players who thoroughly explore the game's contents, supported by a New Game Plus mode for subsequent runs. Cold Symmetry has priced the standard edition at $49.99, alongside a $59.99 Deluxe Edition offering 72 hours of early access prior to the official launch date.
