Developer Game Science has released a 15-minute preview for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, offering a detailed look at the combat and narrative elements of its upcoming mythological action-RPG. Following up on its initial announcement at Gamescom 2025, the new footage demonstrates an evasion-heavy, fast-paced combat system similar to the studio's previous title, Black Myth: Wukong. The trailer follows a new protagonist battling grotesque monsters in atmospheric landscapes, crafting a raft with an elderly companion, and diving into flooded ruins to retrieve a sleeping woman.
The preview highlights fluid swordplay and dodge mechanics, alongside sequence calls where the player summons powerful assistance during a intense boss encounter. Outside of combat, the video showcases a variety of side activities, including fishing and character customization. A poetic passage included in the official video upload reinforces thematic elements centered around memory, retribution, and a descent into the Underworld.
The title draws directly from the Chinese mythology of Zhong Kui, a Tang Dynasty scholar who took his own life after being rejected by the emperor due to his appearance. According to folklore, he was later appointed as an official tasked with subduing evil spirits and commanding ghosts in the Underworld, providing the dark narrative framework for the game.
Game Science has not yet announced a release date or targeted launch platforms for Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
