Video game composer Kumi Tanioka has clarified that a newly released, seemingly AI-generated album credited to her on major streaming platforms was not created by her.
The album, titled "A Village Built on Wind," recently appeared under Tanioka's artist profiles on platforms including Spotify and YouTube Music. Tanioka, best known for composing the soundtrack to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles as well as contributing to Final Fantasy XI and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, addressed the situation on social media, confirming she had no role in the project and questioning if it was AI-generated or released by an artist with the same name.
Digital Sonic Design, a publisher associated with some of Tanioka's compositions, released a statement regarding the upload. The company noted that the release does not constitute copyright infringement and suggested it could belong to another individual sharing Tanioka's name. However, the tracks on YouTube Music have been tagged explicitly as AI-generated, and the accompanying cover image bears visual hallmarks of generative AI.
The incident highlights ongoing issues with digital streaming platforms, where automated uploads and artist name collisions frequently result in unauthorized or misattributed content appearing on established musicians' official pages.
