The Metro franchise is marking a milestone with a free next-generation update arriving for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. The update launches on October 22 for PC and October 29 for consoles, as the series celebrates surpassing 50 million copies sold worldwide across its 16-year history.
Developer 4A Games describes the update as a substantial enhancement rather than a full remake. The original experience and visual style remain intact, but the package adds 4K textures across all platforms, reworked animations, enhanced audio quality, and more detailed environments. The studio has also addressed community-reported bugs and included various quality-of-life improvements.
Console versions receive native support tailored to each platform. PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro gain PSSR upscaling technology, while Xbox Series X benefits from TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing. Both PlayStation and Xbox versions support spatial audio, with players able to choose between native 4K at 60 frames per second or upscaled 4K at 120 frames per second on compatible displays. The update includes upgraded lighting, shadows, particle effects, and hardware tessellation. Both platforms also gain haptic feedback through DualSense Adaptive Triggers on PlayStation and Impulse Triggers on Xbox, plus power-saving modes.
Xbox players receive additional benefits through Play Anywhere support and handheld compatibility, while PC users gain DLSS upscaling alongside spatial audio and quality-of-life enhancements. The update will be free for all existing owners on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, GOG, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
The update arrives ahead of Metro 2039, the franchise's next mainline entry scheduled for February 4. Early hands-on time with the game highlighted its technical ambition and atmospheric intensity, with the new title reportedly pushing the series' signature claustrophobic tension further than previous entries.
