The 1991 Gothic television series Dark Shadows: The Revival is now available to stream for free in its entirety on YouTube. Created by horror producer Dan Curtis, the short-lived series updated his iconic 1960s daytime horror soap opera for prime-time network television, condensing years of convoluted supernatural storylines into a fast-paced gothic melodrama.
The series follows Victoria Winters (Joanna Going), a young governess traveling to the coastal town of Collinsport, Maine. She takes a position at Collinwood, a grand estate owned by the prominent Collins family, to care for a troubled child named David, played by a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The quiet town is soon disrupted when a groundskeeper accidentally releases Barnabas Collins (Ben Cross), a 200-year-old vampire buried beneath the estate. Pretending to be a distant relative visiting from England, Barnabas integrates himself into the family while hunting local residents at night and developing an obsession with Victoria.
Unlike the original 1960s soap opera, which spanned over six seasons and hundreds of episodes before introducing its famous vampire, the 1991 revival dives straight into horror mechanics. Curtis recruited a high-profile ensemble cast for the reboot, including Oscar winner Jean Simmons as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and horror legend Barbara Steele as Dr. Julia Hoffman, a physician attempting to cure Barnabas's vampirism while secretly scheming behind the scenes. In an interview during the show's original run, Curtis noted that while the fundamental characters remained unchanged, he completely reworked the wild subplots of the original daytime scripts to streamline the narrative for modern audiences.
Time Travel and Cancellation
The narrative incorporates classic Gothic tropes alongside dramatic soap opera twists, including séances, ancient curses, and witchcraft. Mid-way through the season, Victoria is involuntarily transported back in time to 1790 during a séance, compressing roughly 100 episodes from the original series into a six-episode narrative arc. In 1790, she uncovers Barnabas’s origins, his lost love Josette, and the witch's curse that transformed him into a creature of the night.
Despite gaining a dedicated cult following, Dark Shadows: The Revival was canceled by NBC after just one season in 1991. Broadcasting interruptions caused by continuous news coverage of the Gulf War regularly disrupted the show's schedule, leading to declining viewership numbers. Although the series ended on an unresolved cliffhanger for several side plots, it successfully completed Victoria's central journey from a naïve governess to a knowledgeable insider who understands the manor's dark secrets. All 12 episodes of the show are currently accessible to view online without a subscription.
