Clint Eastwood’s 1968 feature Hang ‘Em High, a pivotal revenge Western that helped transform the actor into a major Hollywood power player, is now available to stream for free on YouTube.
Before making the film, Eastwood built his worldwide stardom through Sergio Leone’s acclaimed 'Man with No Name Trilogy.' Comprising A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, these European-made Spaghetti Westerns reshaped cinema by trading traditional American idealism for gritty, morally ambiguous characters. Although the trilogy remains legendary, its massive success frequently overshadows the notable film Eastwood made right after completing it.
Released in 1968, Hang ‘Em High marked a vital milestone in Eastwood’s artistic evolution. Leveraging the clout he gained from Leone's films, Eastwood produced the feature alongside screenwriters Leonard Freeman and Mel Goldberg. He personally selected director Ted Post, with whom he had previously collaborated on the classic television series Rawhide, and actively modified the screenplay to flesh out his character. While Eastwood would not step into the director's chair until years later, this project established his interest in shaping complex cinematic narratives.
Set in 1889 before Oklahoma achieved statehood, the story centers on Jed Cooper, a former lawman attempting to live quietly as a rancher. His peaceful life comes to an abrupt end when a ruthless vigilante posse falsely accuses him of murdering a fellow rancher and stealing cattle. The mob lynch Cooper from a tree, but he miraculously survives the hanging and vows to bring his attackers to justice.
Cooper subsequently resumes his law enforcement duties under Judge Fenton, portrayed by Pat Hingle. Fenton is a stern magistrate who believes severe, unyielding punishment is necessary to tame the territory for statehood. However, as Fenton’s ruthless tactics unfold, Cooper finds himself deeply at odds with the magistrate's extreme violence and legal bloodlust.
Beyond its action, Hang ‘Em High stands out for exploring challenging questions about justice, revenge, and morality without providing easy answers. Pat Hingle’s character serves as a multi-dimensional antagonist rather than a basic villain, while Eastwood’s protagonist showcases far greater emotional depth than his previous iconic roles. Film fans can currently stream the entire movie on YouTube at no cost.
