Christopher Judge, the voice and motion-capture actor behind Kratos in recent God of War titles, has confirmed that he passed on playing the character in Amazon Prime Video's upcoming live-action television adaptation. Speaking during a Collider panel at Fan Expo Canada 2026, Judge explained that the intense physical regimen and grueling work schedule required for the live-action role were not appealing to him at 62 years old.
Despite ultimately stepping back, Judge revealed that he initially auditioned for the lead role. He gave the project serious thought after discussing it with his grandson, viewing it as a potential legacy project. Encouraged by family conversations, Judge began weight training and bulking up for the part. However, as the physical toll mounted and he unexpectedly struggled with memorizing lines, he interpreted the difficulty as a sign from his body and mind to walk away.
Taking on the role would have meant enduring 16-to-18-hour daily production shoots alongside constant dieting and exercise. Judge reflected on his previous experience starring as Teal'c in Stargate SG-1 from ages 33 to 44, noting that he had already lived through the intense routine of leading a major series. Decades later, he stated he had no desire to return to that level of grueling physical commitment.
While Judge will not star in the television show, he gave his blessing to actor Dave Bautista, who is set to step into the role of Kratos for the adaptation. Judge's voice performance in 2018's God of War, God of War Ragnarok, and the upcoming God of War Laufey earned critical acclaim, leading many fans to hope he would carry the role into live action.
Gamers will still be able to experience Judge's iconic performance in future video game releases. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Santa Monica Studio head Cory Barlog confirmed that additional God of War projects centered on Kratos remain in active development, ensuring Judge will continue voicing the Ghost of Sparta in interactive media.
