The 1981 holiday slasher movie My Bloody Valentine is now accessible for audiences to stream without cost on Pluto TV. Helmed by director George Mihalka and penned by screenwriter John Beaird, the cult classic offers horror enthusiasts a gory alternative to traditional holiday romance stories.
Set in the fictional mining community of Valentine Bluffs, the story centers around a tragedy occurring two decades prior when a mine collapse trapped several workers because their supervisors abandoned their posts to attend a town dance. One year later, the lone survivor exacted vengeance by killing those supervisors, sending their hearts inside candy boxes, and warning the town never to host another Valentine's Day dance. When local miners and their partners decide to revive the tradition twenty years later, a pickaxe-wielding killer resumes the bloody spree.
Much like John Carpenter's seminal 1978 film Halloween, Mihalka's picture examines a traumatized town haunted by past horrors. Despite features like a distinct masked killer, inventive murder methods, and thematic holiday elements, the movie struggled to stand out upon release. Prominent film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert dismissed the release as an uninspired imitation of Carpenter's work.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures under the initial working title The Secret, the film aimed to capitalise on the lucrative holiday slasher trend pioneered by early predecessors like Black Christmas. However, its box office yield reached only $5.72 million. While it turned a profit, executives viewed the performance as a disappointment when compared to Paramount's previous horror hit, Friday the 13th, which grossed $40 million just one year earlier.
Despite its modest original theatrical release, My Bloody Valentine built a devoted cult following over time, earning praise from acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino as his personal favorite slasher. The property's enduring popularity led to a 2009 3D remake directed by Patrick Lussier, which generated $101 million on a $15 million production budget. Blumhouse Productions currently holds plans to revive the franchise with a future reboot, ensuring the classic slasher's legacy continues for modern audiences.
