A fan-created reimagining of the original Portal video game has officially launched, offering players a free modernized take on the classic 2007 title after a 15-year development cycle. Created by independent development team Rhubarb & Rhubarb, Portal: Alive & Kicking is designed to harmonize the visual and narrative disconnects between the first entry and its 2011 sequel.
The total conversion modification serves as a complete artistic overhaul, upgrading the environmental presentation, introducing a brand-new dynamic soundtrack, and refining puzzle indicators to match Portal 2's design language. The overhaul has received explicit praise from original Valve developer Jeep Barnett, who helped program the signature portal gun mechanics.
The project's release follows a prolonged production period marked by unexpected administrative hurdles. Developer Dot Operator revealed that the project reached a standstill last month despite being entirely complete. After signing non-disclosure and non-compete agreements to utilize source code provided by Valve, the fan team encountered extended radio silence from the studio, temporarily blocking them from releasing the finished modification.
With Valve's approval secured, the mod is now available to download at no extra cost for anyone who owns a copy of Portal 2. However, players attempting to grab the project at launch have encountered temporary downloading glitches on Steam. The development team is actively working with Steam to resolve the technical bug, recommending that users temporarily add the mod to their wishlist as a workaround before downloading. Players must also ensure that the modification is installed on the same drive as Portal 2 to operate correctly.
Initial community reactions on Steam have been mixed, with player feedback varying across the campaign's progression. While reviewers generally praise the early test chambers and visual enhancements as an impressive remake, feedback regarding the final escape sequence and GLaDOS confrontation has been more critical. Despite these mixed impressions toward its conclusion, the mod represents a significant community milestone that remains accessible to all series fans free of charge.
