The initial test period for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 recorded a peak of 115,145 concurrent players on Steam, outperforming last year's entry but trailing previous franchise benchmarks.
According to tracking data from SteamDB, player participation started strong on Friday before gradually tapering off across the weekend. Access to this first session was largely restricted to pre-order customers and giveaway code recipients, limiting overall reach. Unlike recent franchise releases, this test operated under a separate Steam entry rather than inside the unified Call of Duty hub app.
While the turnout improved upon the 100,000 peak recorded during the Black Ops 7 test, it remained below past series highs. Developer Infinity Ward previously set a benchmark in 2022 when the Modern Warfare 2 beta reached 168,330 concurrent users on the platform. The numbers also fell well behind rival shooter Battlefield 6, whose open beta achieved a peak of 521,079 concurrent Steam users.
These figures represent only a portion of total participation, as Steam metrics exclude players on consoles as well as PC users on Battle.net and the Microsoft Store. Throughout the weekend, Infinity Ward issued multiple game patches that introduced a new map, extra modes, weapon balancing, and visibility adjustments. Participation could increase during the upcoming open beta session, which will include expanded maps, modes, and a Warzone preview.
