Double Fine Productions has officially reacquired the publishing rights to its entire catalog following its separation from Xbox, enabling direct fan support as the developer transitions back to an independent model.
Speaking on a recent episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily, studio head Tim Schafer confirmed that ownership of the company's intellectual property and distribution rights has fully reverted to the internal team. While Microsoft branding remains present on several digital store pages, Schafer explained that updating these listings is an ongoing administrative process. Future sales of Double Fine titles will now generate direct revenue for the studio, helping fund its ongoing operations and future projects.
The regain of autonomy also marks the return of company traditions, notably the Amnesia Fortnight game jam. The internal event splits the development team into small groups to build prototype games over a two-week period. To facilitate the revival, Double Fine is launching a Kickstarter campaign on August 31. Backers will have the opportunity to review staff pitches and vote on four concepts for production, with one project ultimately receiving additional polish for a full public release.
This shift back to independence follows a difficult period of restructuring for the developer. Shortly after parting ways with Xbox, Double Fine reduced its workforce by roughly 25 percent to adapt to its new operational scale without corporate backing.
