DC Studios has not yet greenlit a second season of Lanterns, according to co-CEO Peter Safran. The HBO series wrapped its first season earlier this month, and while fans have expressed interest in seeing more, the studio is taking a measured approach to any continuation. Safran indicated that a renewal would depend on whether the collective teams at HBO, DC Studios, and executive producer Chris Mundy believe they can deliver something that lives up to the reception of the inaugural season.
The Path Forward for Season 2
When directly asked whether Lanterns season 2 has been greenlit, Safran gave a straightforward answer: it has not. However, he left room for optimism, suggesting that if the creative stakeholders feel confident about the quality of a potential second season, a renewal would not be surprising. The decision will ultimately hinge on whether the team can craft a story worthy of following the well-received first season, rather than rushing into production without a clear vision.
John Stewart's Expanded Role
The first season concluded with John Stewart choosing to operate as an independent Green Lantern protecting Earth without the backing of the Guardians of the Universe. Viewers will see the character continue his superhero journey in the 2025 Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. Safran explained the strategic decision to introduce Stewart through television rather than immediately in a film, noting that the episodic format allows for deeper character development and world-building that feature films cannot accommodate. Television serves as an effective launching pad for bringing characters into the broader DC film universe.
What Comes Next for DC Television
The next live-action DC television project scheduled is The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a true crime-style docuseries set to arrive in 2027, which will feature Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Beyond that project, DC Studios has not firmly committed to which show or film will follow. Safran indicated that several projects are competing for the next available slot, though the studio maintains an active slate of animated content moving forward. On the live-action side, the timeline remains flexible and subject to change based on production schedules and creative priorities.
Other DC Projects in Development
Safran also provided updates on several other DC initiatives currently in progress. The upcoming Mister Miracle series has cast its leads, and acclaimed writer Scott Snyder is currently developing scripts for an Absolute Batman animated series. On the film side, director James Gunn has not yet announced which project he will direct next within the DC Studios slate.
