The filmmakers behind the new survival thriller Fall 2: Deadpoint elected to abandon the high-altitude radio tower concept of the 2022 original in favor of a moving, cliffside obstacle course based on a terrifying real-world destination.
Directed by brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, the sequel shifts the franchise's claustrophobic focus toward a broader, more active environment. Rather than repeating the premise of the first film, the directors drew inspiration from China's notorious Huashan Plank Walk. After researching footage of tourists navigating the dangerous cliffside route, the creators recognized that moving sideways across a mountain face offered far more opportunities for varied action set pieces than a static pole.
In the new film, protagonists Jax, portrayed by Harriet Slater, and Luce, played by Arsema Thomas, must navigate decaying wooden planks, slick rock faces, and sudden rockfalls. The physical journey is paired with personal drama, as Jax struggles with the loss of her sister, Shiloh, who died during the events of the original movie. While serving as a complete narrative on its own, Fall 2 also sets up events for a planned third movie, maintaining the overarching trilogy developed by original writer-director Scott Mann.
Rather than relying entirely on indoor soundstages and digital backgrounds, the directors prioritized practical, outdoor filmmaking. The crew constructed a realistic cliff environment within an actual quarry, elevating the set approximately 40 feet off the ground. Actors performed on narrow ledges while secured by safety harnesses, enduring actual sunlight alongside artificial wind and water blasts to make their physical strain feel genuine on screen.
To replicate the immersive feel of modern amateur climbing videos, the production team utilized custom body-mounted camera rigs. This technique allowed the audience to experience close-up, first-person perspective shots similar to GoPro footage shared on social media. The directors emphasized that grounded human vulnerability, rather than superhero feats, was key to delivering an authentic thrill. Fall 2: Deadpoint is currently showing in theaters.
