Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly run at a locked frame rate of 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox platforms when it initially debuts.
The performance details surfaced following a visit by Brazilian content creator Davy Jones to Rockstar North. Ahead of the GTA 6 Extended Look premiering on Netflix, Jones was granted early access to preview the anticipated open-world title. During a subsequent YouTube stream, the creator relayed insights from conversations with Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, who indicated that console versions are locked at 30 FPS during development.
In addition to the frame rate cap, Jones stated that the blockbuster title will lack a first-person camera perspective when it arrives on store shelves. Previous leaks had fueled expectations that the game would feature both a high-fidelity Quality mode and a smoother 60 FPS Performance mode at launch. However, launching with a single 30 FPS target aligns with Rockstar's historical releases, including the original debuts of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
While a 60 FPS performance mode could eventually be added through post-launch software updates, there is currently no word on when such a patch might arrive. It also remains unconfirmed whether Sony's upgraded PlayStation 5 Pro hardware will be capable of pushing the title past 30 FPS at launch. High-frame-rate gameplay might ultimately depend on next-generation systems, such as the rumored PlayStation 6 or Microsoft's Xbox Project Helix.
Given the uncertainty surrounding technical specifications, consumers looking to upgrade their hardware specifically for Grand Theft Auto 6 may want to wait until official announcements are made. Rockstar Games has not yet publicly confirmed official performance benchmarks across all supported consoles.
