Konami is set to permanently shut down its mobile action-adventure title Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls on September 3, rendering the game completely unplayable even for players who currently have it installed. The publisher officially announced the upcoming service termination on August 16, subsequently removing the title from the Apple Arcade platform on August 20 ahead of the final server shutdown.
The side-scrolling action game with RPG elements originally launched in Canada for iOS and Android devices back in September 2019. However, Konami pulled that initial version about a year later before reworking the project entirely. In September 2021, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls relaunched as an Apple Arcade exclusive, boasting upgraded graphics, refreshed character models, and the complete removal of microtransactions.
Set within the franchise's dark gothic universe, the story follows Genya Arikado—an alter ego of the iconic character Alucard—after he receives a mysterious letter warning of new dangers. The game notably brought together a broad roster of classic heroes from across the series, allowing players to control legendary vampire hunters such as Simon Belmont, Richter Belmont, and Trevor Belmont.
Despite positive adjustments made during its Apple Arcade transition, the spin-off failed to cultivate a large enough user base to sustain long-term operations. Konami did not specify the exact reasons for ending service, though low player engagement and profitability are presumed to be the main drivers. In its closure announcement, the company expressed gratitude to fans for their support, though no alternative preservation options have been announced.
The shutdown occurs while Konami continues a broader push to revitalize its core gaming franchises. Alongside ongoing efforts with titles like Silent Hill f, Silent Hill: Townfall, and various Metal Gear remasters, the publisher continues to manage Castlevania's legacy through collections and projects like Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, even as older mobile entries fade away.
