RGG Studio has released the opening story trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, offering the first look at the game's narrative as it follows protagonist Makoto Daito's early journey. The trailer showcases Act 1 of the game, which spans a sprawling narrative across five eras and five Japanese cities between 1915 and 1965. The studio plans to share additional story trailers leading up to the game's launch on January 15, 2027.
The Opening Act
The first act centers on Makoto's arrival in Japan after he stows away on a ship following his parents' death. The vessel is captained by Orpheus, a trading merchant portrayed by Snoop Dogg, who becomes instrumental in Makoto's early survival. When the ship reaches Kokura in Fukuoka, Makoto discovers that Japan bears little resemblance to the place he had imagined. Orpheus takes Makoto under his protection, eventually helping him integrate into the Yashima clan as he navigates the harsh realities of life in an unwelcoming city.

The Full Story Arc
The game's narrative spans five distinct locations and time periods across Japan. After beginning in Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915, the story progresses to Kure, Hiroshima in 1929, then Minami, Osaka in 1943, followed by Atami, Shizuoka in 1951, and concluding in Shinjuku, Tokyo in 1965. This structure allows the game to explore Makoto's evolution across multiple decades and regions, with each location presenting distinct challenges and character development opportunities.
Multimedia Expansion
Beyond the game itself, Sega has partnered with Netflix to develop adaptations of Stranger Than Heaven alongside other properties including Crazy Taxi and Sonic. This multi-platform approach means fans of the franchise will have opportunities to experience the story across different media formats, with further details on the Stranger Than Heaven adaptation expected to emerge as the game's release approaches.
The January 2027 release date was confirmed at Summer Game Fest 2026. The game's launch window places it several months after other major releases, positioning it as a significant title for early 2027.
